Review by T. A. Goodall for Toshiba DR19DTKB Freeview+ DVD Recorder – Black

My Panasonic DMR55 after giving good service started to give problems so I purchased the DR19DT, a week ago, before the VAT increase. I was a bit fed up to find it did not record on Ram discs. It will play some region 1 dvds, if anyone can suggest a code to make it completely multiregion I would be gratefull. I found the speeds for different functions about the same as my Panasonic. The instruction book is a bit overwhelming, but I found basics easy to understand and I am an old age pensioner. It does not have a hard drive and I cannot comment on the HMDI upscaling, as my 32 inch Sony wega does not have HD. No problems with the freeview. Overall it seems to be allright for the price,I will wait and see. I believe you only get what you pay for.

This PVR/DVR does NOT contain a hard disk/large internal storage capacity (this is the last time I trust Amazon’s tags). These days, that is reason enough to dismiss it, as you are only going to squeeze four-five hours on to a DVD at low quality. Frustratingly, as this was a present to someone else, I was not able to send it back for a refund after finding this out.
The product itself has an HDMI connection (but does not come with an HDMI cable) which works with a Samsung TV and can up-sample DVDs to 1080p if your TV can take it. It receives digital broadcasts, has a TV guide (which can be set to record all the shows in a series) and is quite quiet. Although not immediately evident, the facilities it can offer will depend on DVD type (the most flexible to use are DVD-RW – if you have DVD+RWs there will be some inaccessible features). It can also play DivX files.
Unfortunately it has a number of weaknesses. The menus are not easy to navigate nor especially pretty. It takes ten or so seconds to power up from standby (I only hope that’s saving a lot of power). Normal video DVD playback “response speed” is awful, with the player taking a long time to spin disks up and even longer to navigate through them (a DVD quiz had long waits after an answer was chosen). The person I bought this for had trouble hooking it up (worth bearing in mind if you are not technically inclined). The TV can’t wake the box up over HDMI when it is standby and the useful “operate using the TV’s remote control” HDMI feature is ruined by not supporting the TV remote’s record button or arrow buttons.
Overall this product is fiddly to use, slow, obsolete, does not integrate as well as it might with other equipment and is an awkward DVD player to boot. I would only consider it if it were half the price (or less) of hard disk PVRs…

Not as easy to use as the Panasonics and no DVD ram capability. I have had more than one Panny die on me, so I am hoping the Tosh will be longer lived. The Freeview is not very good with weak signals, hopefully this will improve with analogue switch off Pictures recorded look good and upscaling seems to give an improvement to pre recorded DVD’s.

No idea how to rate this item as didn’t get to use it!
On opening the plastic packaging could tell this item had been opened before and resealed. When we opened the box the DVD player had obviously been used by someone else and so I sent it back to Amazon – better safe than sorry. They refunded without much of a delay.
