Ok this I will keep shortish,
I hunted high and low to get the right box and I could only find 1 but it was worth the search as it does the lot.
Weve had 3 digital boxes 2 HDD recorders countless dvd players with divx and USB support…. and I couldnt find one that did it all I had a philips dvd/hdd/divx/usb but it struggled to read discs and some divx files (plus wouldnt play mpg1 /vcd files form the hdd!) which 2 other philips players we have have no probs, also this had a analogue tuner only, I checked out a more expensive Toshiba but wouldnt allow copying of divx files on to the hdd and lacked a USB, so I looked at the samsung and most reviews slated them, so looked at Sony but doesnt allow play back of divx from the hdd… hmm then I found this box and I down loaded then manufactures manuals and it does the lot and more.. Ive tried it out no lock ups crashes the only thing I was worried about was region free but that can be done and works a treat, It has a file explorer to create folders and organise files on the hdd too, bonus.
It has USB (1.1), DVD recording, DV (i-link) for camcorder built in software to create your chapters and menus before your burn your home movies to DVD!, Digital Free View Tuner, Plays divx no problems, Mpeg1, Photos, copy them all from DVD/CD/USB to the HDD, Analogue tuner too which you can record from plus record from an external device via scart or phono, Audio dubing, editing and cropping recorded programs, burn them to DVD…. think thats it I found countless forum questions I want a box to do all this but most questions are either unanswered or replied I dont think there is a box that will do it all…. well now you know there is and the build quality for the software(which is the important bit now) is to match the best of them if not exceeds. ++++ Recommended

I bought this specifically because I like to stream my movies and music from my PC (saves messing about with discs etc) I used to have my media files on my external harddrive and stream them from my Laptop to my Home system, but was alot of messing about every time (plugging everything in etc). I have also has wireless media players etc but again found them to be unreliable and dont always want to have to have my pc switched on to view anything, as we’re all power conscious now coz of price rises). I read about this having a USB input and bought it.
I now simply plug my external harddrive into the USB port, no wires, no messing about. You do need to have a powered harddrive though, as the USB port does not give enough power, my external harddrive was bus powered, but I solved this by spending £6 on a mains powered USB hub, and now it works a treat, I simply plug my Harddrive into the hub and off i go.
It has played all my movies and music with no problems so far. One thing that could be improved would be some form of search feature to search your media files, as its hard to find what you want if you have alot on there, but this is minor and would/has not put me off.
I now have everything I want to watch or listen to in one place, without having to have a separate device to be able to do so, with only one remote control and no extra cables. It does take a little while to index all of the files for browsing on your tv, about a minute or so, but this depends on how many files you have i suppose.
I have given this 4 stars, and missed off the 5th coz of the lack of search feature. You can add items to a ‘program list’ which acts as a playlist, but you cannot save this list for future use, you can however save the ‘progam list’ if you have copied your music to the dvd recorders internal harddrive
Definately recommend.

I did quite a bit of research and thought this would be the right machine for us. It is a nice looking box and it has a good spec.
There are some aspects that are great – menu for searching recorded items is especially good and easy to use and the storage capacity is great.
However it does have some drawbacks :
– it doesn’t record in background, so switches the TV display over to the channel it is recording on, giving the watcher a few secs to either cancel recording or switch TV input source(and get to right channel)
– it records with subtitles on, even when not selected
– we never got the live tv pause to work (but this might be the set up here)
– the remote control is not ideally designed (e.g. the epg button is small and difficult to locate in dark, yet quite frequently used)
- it doesn’t remember where you got to if you want to return to a recording that you are part way through watching.
We are now looking to return the box after 6 months as the sound output has become defective(we have to restart the box – sometimes more than once) when we put the TV on – even if the box has been on all the time – to get any sound output.

This would be a great little model except for 2 annoying things.
I keep having to switch off subtitles.. I have used set up .,.. but the darn things keep coming back.
Second problem is Series Link does not work for me in the EPG… which is a huge disappointment.. ( but it could be something not quite working ? )
Other than that it is a great unit… looks nice… got powerdown mode.. and I like the menu to find your recordings…

I have now owned this unit for about four months and thought I would write a quick review based on our experience.
1) Playback
The unit has a USB 1 connector. Not USB 2.0. This means that a 740MB file for example takes about 25 minutes to copy up. If it was USB 2 it would take about 2 mins at most.
We have not managed to load anything it cannot play yet. But filing is an issue as you cannot search the recordings and the scroll takes a long time if you have a lot of them. The programmes are filed by date in ascending order so the oldest one is at the top of the list and the newest at the bottom.
2) Recording
Well subtitles is annoying quite frankly. When you record a programme and try to watch it at the same time you cannot turn off the subtitles and they are quite big and intrusive.
It is also possible to confuse the unit by recording two series which overlap. For example if ITV have changed the time of one of their “series” the RH398 knows this and will adapt its recording time unless it is already trying to record another “series” on a different chanel at which point it just gives up and throws a hissy and won’t record anything else at all on the timer. You have to then try and find out what was wrong and eliminate one of the “series” which again is hard as the menu is quite unhelpful and does not display a map of the series recorded (a thread if you like) and there is no search function.
My children enjoy confusing it as they are little brats and like watching Daddy get mad as his favourite late show is not recorded because they have tried to series record some reality TV rubbish which then got moved to a later slot.. lol
Hope this is helpful. If it had USB 2.0, the option to record without displaying the subtitles and a more intelligent menu system for working out what you have recorded and what you are currently programmed to record it would have got a 5.
