I bought this machine based on price and the positive review that I had read. What a mistake that was. Whilts the Samsung looks a sleek machine and appears to be able to store a huge volume on its hard drive the following problems exist
1) The handbook requires a degree in science to be able to make head or tale of anything.
2) The remote is supposed to sync with a Samsung TV so that you only need one remote to control both TV and DVD – it doesnt – it just loses any settings that you need
3) The player must be on at all times to be able to record on the Timer, which is crazy
We are in the process of trying to get this machine uplifted by the 3rd party seller and replaced by something more user friendly

I bought this as I loved my new Samsung TV. I have an old Panasonic recordable DVD with Hard Drive (probaly 6 years old!) and never for one minute did I think the technology of such an up to date company as Samsung could not match Panasonic from years ago. The programme guide list is very amateurish and old hat and when you record from the list it doesn’t actually pull in the programme title! Therefore you either have to remember what you have recorded (call me dumb but if I’d recorded to it’s full capacity I fail to see how I could be expected to remember 450 hours of recording) or play it back to see what you’ve recorded or go into the recording list, select the item and manually enter the title! I even phoned Samsung thinking this must be operator error on my part but they confirmed it does not have the capability to pull in the title of the programme!! What a load of rubbish this machine is, it is straight on it’s way back and I may revert to a Panasonic even though it won’t match my TV. DO NOT BUY unless you have nothing better to do than mess with the thing!

i now had this machine for 5 days now and have regreated it! iv had nothing but problems with it
1/ it keep freezing when you put on the EPG or push the OK button to change channel
2/ the i button does’t do much when recording on freeview mode
3/ when recording on freeview the name of the program does not come up
so after 3 recordings you dont know what you got recorded its gest the date you record it on
4/ can the remote control be any bigger or have any more buttons? so many
5/ when you go into the EPG scroll down to record something the channel changes to the channel no matter what
you do if you go to BBC1 and record something on quest! no matter what button you push you end up at quest
channel
6/ picture quality nowhere as good as the panasonic
7/ the manual book is over 106 pages long and you still dont know what half the stuff does

Today, June 7th.. I returned my second Samsung DVDR SH895M.. my first bought in Tesco in November 09.. taken back by Feb as it had developed multiple problems.. and last week its dvd unit finally `gave up`. WELL.. yes.. Freeview pic can freeze while recording to HD on timer.. meaning.. on comes the tv with the frozen pic still on it.. and the menu will then say..`recovered`.. as if its half expected. Well.. todays exchange.. the 3rd model since Nov 09.. did one recording for me no problem as it should have.. and the caption telling you to wait.. while disc is updated.. took roughly 30 secs to go.. right. Thats a hint. Well.. tried a second and the end caption DIDNT go away. Now I know once that happens, one hasnt had the recording `ok`d.. and the menu when checked back will not run. To get RID of the caption one has to unplug.. SO.. from second attempt.. ON tesco dvd+rw`s.. which have been ok for me until now.. just one success.. and over a period of 6-8 goes.. it managed three successful recordings. SO.. erratic and now caption doesnt go away at all. SO.. unplug for tonight and see tomorrow. This one hasnt frozen on freeview or my satellite in aux yet.. but the dvd is looking iffy already. WHAT is with the software updates on the site? Surely WE arent supposed to do those? So.. very dissillusioned.. I`m glad I`m not a tv engineer any more.. these would send you round the twist. WHAT HAS happened to Samsung? From these reviews.. this is common. If this doesnt clear.. its going back yet again for a refund. I`m more annoyed because apart from these niggles.. I LOVE the machine.. I`m now used to the delay while it has to `format` the disc.. and its other foibles.. but blimey.. it DID what I wanted.. yes.. transferring HD recordings to dvd took a short time.. but they were ok..
SO.. ideal for me who likes to save many progs on disc. BUT..is the Toshy better?
RIGHT… addena? In addition.. June 30th… took my third Samsung back Monday and had it changed yet again.. this one didnt like re-writeables from word go and I found minus r`s fine.. didnt even put graphics up to say its being formatted.. SO.. put up.. until last week when it started freezing on RECORD.. on dvd.. meaning one has to unplug it to clear it.. goodbye recording. That did it.. rang tesco helpline again.. another number and changed it again Monday. WILL this one behave? I dont mind going through Tesco entire stock if ONE will behave.. but there do seem to be inherent problems, like Philips used to? Too clever for its own good and gets confused? The times Philips domestics used to have to be unplugged to clear a..`mains lockout`? Instruction books even started saying.. if theres a problem.. unplug.. but how many times? No.. not impressed.. GREAT machine this, but.. reliable?

I bought this dvd recorder for my nan as her previous model didnt survive the digital switchover. The set up is pretty straightforward except i cant get rid of bbc wales for bbc england. The recording process at first is complex but once youve done it a couple of times its fairly simple (although my nan does still struggle). all in all its a fairly decent player and after researching some of the other options available its a bit of a bargain.
