When my Philips DVD player needed replacing I checked out their new models but decided to go for a Sony, as I already own a Bravia HD-ready TV and I wanted the functionality of Bravia-Link, as well as 1080p upscaling via a HDMI connection. The Sony DVPNS728HB DVD player looks good and is a nice match with my Black Bravia flatscreen TV. The display only illuminates once the player is powered up, it is switched off when in standby. This gives the unit a streamlined look when not in use.
Playing a DVD is easy and the menu is simple to set up although it has various user options. The playback quality is superb, there is a marked improvement in the picture definition when compared to standard Sky TV and Freeview, which of course there should be. If you are using this player with a Bravia TV I strongly recommend watching films in Theatre Mode, as this gives a more realistic picture.
I also like the USB socket on the front panel for playing MP3s. One note of caution, be sure to only use a listed Sony USB drive as other USB drives may not be compatible.
In conclusion, If you don’t want to go the whole hog and buy a Blue Ray player, but you want a HDMI connected DVD player at a good price, this may be exactly what you are looking for.

I ordered this item believing it to be a multi region DVD player as described in the technical specifications on the Amazon Website. However, having tried some of my region 1 DVDs in the player, and subsequently checking on the Sony website I find that it is not multi region, which was a dissapointment. Having said that I am more than happy with the player as a product and certainly dvds benefit from the HD upscaling (I have a Bravia HD TV).

I am very pleased with my purchase of Sony DVP-NS728HB.
The only issue is the fact that it plays DVDs with Region Code 2 only.
I live in an area of the world where it is possible to legally rent DVDs of region 1 and 2. Hence, I think this model would have been ideal if it was multi-regional.

This player was purchased to replace a cheap brand upscaling DVD player (a Sumvision Pheonix) which also had a USB host. The cheap player came to the end of its life when it stopped ejecting DVDs. I decided to go for a Sony this time as I have a Bravia TV.
Pros of the Sony player:
- Better picture quality. The upscaling produces a crisp picture which is probably about as good as you are going to get from your DVDs.
- The USB host plays .avi files, loads them quickly and you can fast forward through them.
- The USB also plays .jpeg files in HD – sharp pictures.
Niggles with the Sony player:
- Although it can play both videos and photos from the USB, it will not do both. If you put both videos and photos on the USB stick it will only detect the movies, as far as the player is concerned there are no photos. To see photos the memory stick can only have photo files on it.
- The box claims it is Mp4 compatable but it does not play any of the Mp4s I’ve tried.
- The arrow keys on the remote when pushed once, more often than not move the screen menu twice.
Overall this is a quality player, if it was more flexible with the USB and more compatable with other file types I’d give it five stars, as is I think four is about right… maybe three and a half

I wanted a Decent 1080 DVD player that I could also connect to my stereo system to play CDs without having the tv on. This Sony DVPNS728HB might seem alittle pricey but is just the ticket Good quality sound and the DVD is as good as my main Bravia one. Thank you for an effortless and speedy transaction.
