Got this box to replace a Wharfedale unit and could not be happier – well, just a little actually (but only very minor things).

It is way, way better than the old box even though it is smaller and the display a little less informative than the one it replaced. The picture quality is excellent, even using scart, and the HDMI picture is brilliant. I got this as I thought my Freeview signal was poor with the Wharfedale doing it’s own ‘freeze-frame’ effect when watching some channels. After getting an engineer to check over the aerial and connections and finding no problems I came to suspect the box and sure enough, this Sagem give a stable reception. It is also less prone to dropouts when turning other equipment on or off.

Setup is easy – although my unit was initially set to France(?) which messed up the radio channels but a quick reset cured that. The menus are great being clear and understandable and it is super quiet in operation – even when recording to the HD.

If I would put anything on the list of ‘wish-it-hads’ it would be the facility to set auto channel changing program reminders and the ability to swap between the viewed channel and the picture-in-picture channel without having to exit then select the other channel. But these are minor things and do not detract greatly from this great bit of kit.

If you are looking for a good, reasonably priced Freeview PVR and don’t want the hassle of Freesat then this will fit the bill.

Bought this item because I recently moved to an area not serviced by cable and where satellite dishes aren’t allowed on the roof.

First the good: yes, the picture quality is decent, the Sagem box does indeed record two programmes at the same time and folders can be created by the user to organise recorded shows. On the other hand, there are some provisos. It doesn’t record programmes if you leave it in any state other than regular television mode. What does that mean? Well, if you’re watching a DVD the box won’t record any programmes; if you’ve left the box in “Guide” mode (i.e. the Electronic Programme Guide is on screen) it won’t record either (the EPG doesn’t automatically disappear after a given period of time). I found this out first-hand when I left it in “Guide” state and went out for the evening only to find that nothing had recorded.

And talking of the EPG, if you’re used to whizzing through menus on a Sky+ box you’ll be disappointed with the clunkiness of the Sagem’s in-built Guide and other menu functions. It’s desperately slow and lacking in responsiveness and overall, the experience is frustrating. Incidentally, pressing the left, right, up or down arrows when actually watching TV results in… nothing. You’d expect it to tell you what’s on on the same channel next and what’s currently playing on other channels. And there’s no page up / down option so you can get to the channel you’re interested in quickly.

All in all, it does what it says on the tin. Just not very well.

This receiver suffers with a poor tuner. The exact same antenna connection when plugged into our freeview TV picks up a lot more channels (and displays them with no problems/pixelation). The stations that this does pick up are often too pixelated to view (even with a good signal).

The recorder part is both clumsy and unreliable. If you enter the program guide whilst a program is recording, the recording may (or may not) simply stop. Recordings are missed and no error is given (unlike say Sky+ where if a recording is missed you are informed as to the reason such as no signal, power cut, technical problem etc…)

The remote control is very unresponsive too.

There are few redeeming features with this box and as such it has been returned for a full refund.

The previous recorder we had (Sony) was better than this one.

Easier to install, and graphics were better, I thought this one would the same, but no.

Next time I must stick with the “devil you know”.

As usual Amazon were magnificent in dealing with the returned item. A review is not really possible because it did not work.
