I read a positive review of this product and to say it was totally misleading is putting it mildly. This was purchased with my Samsung LE40A656 but NOT from Amazon
Where do I start.
The unit is unresponsive to the remote. This then leads to the the classic issue in that you press a button multiple times thinking that the button press has not been registered, but of course it has. The means that any menu options are overshot and then any corrections look like they are ignored and of course they not and the corrections are overshot. You have to sit and wait there for it to catch up with itself. This also happens when changing channels. I originally thought it was the EPG updating that caused the slowdown but seems to happen as and when it likes.
Press your nose against the front of the unit and you can read the display. Any further back and forget it. No way to brighten it either.
Hard drive recordings. There is no resume play. Press stop during playback and the unit returns to the Recorded Items list. Press play again and it starts again from the beginning. There is an option to choose a starting point within the program recorded but again this is as good as useless as it suffers from the above unresponsiveness. This makes it nigh on impossible to select the starting position required.
Editing Recordings. Seems to work OK when deleting sections ie adverts.
Timer Recordings. For this option to work the unit has to be in standby. This means that if you are watching a DVD and want the timer to record a program at the same time ie a series linked program it will not.
Anynet+. This is for linking Samsung products via a HDMI cable eg to the above TV. Good in theory but if you want to control the TV via the DVD remote some issues do appear. The main one being Input Select. If Anynet is activated on the DVD Recorder when you try and change from say built in Freeview to Sky on scart socket AV2 the TV changes input not the DVD. Anynet needs to be activated from the TV.
Instructions are not clear to say the least.
Remote is more suitable as a TV remote and not for a DVD Player/Recorder.
DVD Upscaling via HDMI is pretty good. Sound and picture quality are what I would expect.
Finally do not buy this unit.

I bought this machine to complement my new Samsung Blu-Ray player even though the SH855 model seemed to have some variable reviews. I wish I’d taken heed of those bad reviews! The unit initially set up very easily but then the problems started. It was extremely slow to react to the remote and some functions didn’t work at all, in particular, the tv programme guide. This wouldn’t load properly so that there were always gaps in the grid listings. The picture and sound were out of sync constantly so it seemed there was a fault in the receiver. I have a Samsung series 6 40″ TV so I knew it wasn’t a problem with the incoming signal. After a week of trying, I finally gave up and returned the unit to Amazon who very promptly refunded my money without quibble.
I’m very disappointed as the unit looked great and matched my Blu-Ray player, and I really wanted a hard drive recorder with HDMI connection which the hard drive only recorders don’t seem to have. I wonder if there is just too much technology here for the money or was I just unlucky?

I went out and bought the SH873M to match my Samsung TV, got it home and wow, what a disappointment. You can’t read the display on the front (not that it gives any useful information if you could), the EPG is SLOW if it works at all, the picture keeps freezing and the sound goes out of sync, and when you load a DVD it sounds like an aircraft landing. Just horrible to use in every way.
Maybe a software update might help, but my solution: Get your money back and buy a Sony RDRHXD 890, a few quid more but an absolute beauty.

Having purchased four Samsung DVD recorders previously and having always found them faultless, I stupidly ignored the negative reviews that this product got – please don’t make the same mistake. It’s slow to respond to any command, especially from the remote (which itself is stupidly laid out), the EPG is completely unusable, you can’t read the display from anywhere other than right in front of it, playback images for DVDs recorded on another Samsung were heavily pixelated, mine froze constantly and knackered one of my DVDs. Needless to say, it was sent back (I have since purchased an LG – RHT-397H DVD Player/Recorder and would recommend it to anyone).

I bought this to go with my new Samsung 42″ plasma, I’ve grappled with it for almost a month now the menus are very slow almost impossible to set a recording, the unit freezes for a pastime (have to turn off the mains to reset it and changing chanels is a lottery you never get the one you wanted. I’ve just packed mine up to return it for a refund, take my advise don’t touch this model it’s rubbish!!!!!
ps I’d give it no stars but the system won’t let you give less than 1
