I purchased this DVD HDD recorder in Decembar 2004 and the first problems started in June 2005. When trying to setup multiple timer recordings the machine would lock up for no apparent reason. The only way to clear the problem was to disconnect the mains supply. It was returned for repair in July and a new HDD and firmware were installed. In September the fault re-occurred and the technical dept advised another firmware upgrade. No improvement. Returned again in October 2005 for further repairs and within 45 minutes of me getting it back with a comment from the engineers that there were no faults it has failed again. At the end of its two year back to base repair warranty it will be propelled into a skip and I will buy a proper DVD HDD recorder. Avoid like the plague

I’ve had mine for the last 6 months and I’m impressed with the quality of recordings to the HD and onto disc. It’s also easier to use than a JVC model that I bought my girlfriend.
It’s just that it’s so damned unpredictable – it will work fine for weeks and then suddenly it freezes, often when splitting a file. Typically, after unplugging (the remote control is also locked out) the second part of the file split is corrupt and is unviewable and must be deleted.
Like some other reviewers, I’ve also had the entire contents of my HD disappear. The first time I lost them for good. The second time, I switched the machine off and on again and waited for the HD to be rescanned and surprisingly the contents reappeared. Perhaps, if I’d done that the first time, I’d have recovered the lost files, who knows.
Overall, I still think the machine was a good buy, especially now that I don’t panic when it freezes. It is tiresome dealing with the glitches, but it works fine 99% of the time. It’s so much better than my old VCR and I prefer it to the JVC HD recorder (which once froze big time – I had to turn the power on and off 3 times and wait an age before it finally rebooted and recovered the contents of the HD).
It’s still pretty good value for relatively new technology, but if you can wait I predict there will be better, cheaper and more reliable models within the next 12 months.

Liteon 5045 Hdd+Dvd Recorder
There is Scart cable included in the box contrary to the Amazon advert and the instruction leaflet.
Also not mentioned is a complimentary DVD-RW.
Basically a great machine but does have a few little foibles.
Video passthrough the Scart inout doesn’t really work right (not with NTL cable TV anyhow) you loose Widescreen to your TV and there are artifacts on the screen.
I tried different aspect ratios in the Liteon’s setup menu but no difference.
The way around this for me was to connect the Liteon to the TV with Component video cable. This gives perfect picture in widescreen also.
But this means you’ve got to connect up the Audio separately, luckily my TV has got it’s own surround sound decoder built-in so it wasn’t too far to run the optical and coaxial cables.
So my setup is:-
NTL box > scart > Liteon box > Composite video > TV
NTL box > scart > VHS > scart > TV
Now for the complimentary DVD-RW,
If you’ve used these before you’ll know they need formatting first.
Nowhere in the instructions does it mention this or how to do it.
Go to DISC TOOLS Select ERASE then DVD (takes about 5 mins.)
You can record straight to disc(DVD SVCD VCD or DVD-RW) or obviously straight to HDD.
BUT anything you’ve saved to HDD can only be written to a DVD(RW) afterwards. Which is a bit of a pain if you want to make SVCDs from captured camcorder footage.
The Liteon will read all of my old homemade VCDs SVCDs and DVD-Rs and the discs it writes will play in all my players so it’s a thumbs up for reading /writing.
Timeshifting is pretty cool but if you’ve got a rear projection or plasma TV, don’t leave the static image on the screen too long.
You can also edit Movies saved to HDD or DVD-RW but it’s a bit of a laborious process.
Another review mentioned the Liteon was noisy but all I can hear is the DVD drive wizzing up to speed when a disc is inserted (and then only when I’m sat right next to it )
The main selling point for me was the 160Gb HDD, all the other HardiscDvd recorders in this price range only give you 80Gb.
The region free hack works.
All in all I’m pleased with this, the best thing is not having to find a blank vhs cassette 1 minute before you favourite program is about to start (even though we’ve got hundreds somewhere ! )
4 stars.

I was very very pleased with the machine to start with but it does seem to lock up with amazing regularity. It has also lost all its hard disc recordings on three seperate occasions since I purchased it in March of this year. If it locks up I can’t trust that all of its contents will still be there after I restart the machine. The dealer suggested I Email Lite-on and they replied suggesting that I contact dealer. I’ve updated the firmware numerous times and I believe that they realese firmware updates to fix bugs that should have been fixed before it was realeased. I entered the reset code from liteon. Its deffinately bugridden but Having said that it does seem to have improved recently, not locking me out as often.

I purchased this Recorder shortly before Christmas so i have only had it for a few weeeks.Just after placing the order i read some quite adverse comments in WHAT TV/HI-FI re.recorded picture quality and the performance of the in built tv tuner.Dont let this put anyone off as the recorded picture and tv tuner performance is excellent and the machine is an absolute breeze to operate. The Allwrite technology works perfectly and handles all the formats without any trouble. The only problem I encountered, and it was only a problem because the Instruction Manual did not mention it,was with the Timer.
Unlike a VCR expired timer settings are NOT deleted automatically from timer screen.this has to be done manually through a slightly cumbersome reset operation. If you dont do this the timer screen will eventually fill up and you will have to overwrite the old settings.I contacted Liteon about this and they said that this was normal practice.
Back to the positives, the browser,easi-guide,navigateor and all other functions are excellent and combined with the massive 160G HD make this recorder a great buy
