Dont buy this item until someone writes the software has been updated, nearly everyday i get told to re tune by it,it frequently misses scheduled recordings, interference on picture(even though its quick and gone in a second)!reverts back to 576i on reboot for some reason, the sleep timer does`t work unless you are wathching live tv not a recording!VERY DISSAPOINTED,BUT I THINK IF SAGEM CARED THEY WOULD BE SENDING SOFTWARE/FIRMWARE UPDATES TO RESOLVE THESE PROBS AS ITS ALL SOFTWARE PROBLEMS!

THIS IS SHOWING ME THEY DO NOT CARE ABOUT THEIR CURRENT CUSTOMERS ONLY IN GETTING NEW ONES!

I got this as a recorder for my bedroom and I have ot say it has exceeded expectations.

Incredibly easy to set up, tune in and use it has a large memory for storing programmes. Once you get your head around the menu it is logical and simple, allowing you to record 2 programmes simultaneously.

    The only gripes are:-

1: the menu itself – if you are used to a Sky or Virgin menu, it takes a while to get used to a different system. Not Sagems problem as it is simple enough but in a perfect world they would all be the same.

2: the Scart lead provided is ridiculously small.

3: There is no HDMI cable provided – I bought one for 49p so they are cheap enough to throw in.

In all though an excellent product which privdes value for money if you sont want to pay for an extra Sky/Virgin+ box.

Well, if it always worked how it is supposed to work then this would be a decent recorder, but only ever decent because the interface is a bit rubbish and the machine is slow. But it wasn’t even decent for me because the recordings kept messing up:

Problem 1: I set recordings in the menu area, highlighting the shows in red. The shows show in the Recording Timers section but the shows don’t record.

Problem 2: I set recordings in the menu area, highlighting the shows in red. But the shows don’t show in the Recording Timers, and don’t record.

Problem 3: Tried to record a channel when watching the program by pressing record but the only thing that happened was a box in the left corner popped up and it didn’t record.

So basically being able to record stopped working. The only way to fix the problem was to constantly do a beginning installation again. Then everything worked fine for awhile but then messed up again.

I contacted Sagem and over the phone they told me it was faulty. They sent me out a brand new one right away. That did the same thing after two weeks. I contacted the company again and they told me to buy an attenuator. But all an attenuator would do would help achieve optimum inference-free reception and would have no effect on making the recorder start working again. For the recorder stopped and didn’t work at all.

They then said for me to take it to a family or friends house and let them try it out. I told them I didn’t have anybody that I could just dump this recorder off at and say test it out for me (And shouldn’t Sagem test their own machine out first before they put it on the market?). So I asked for a refund but they said they couldn’t do that. I then contacted Amazon, who is always brilliant, and they gave me a refund even with it having already been over 30 days since I had the machine.

I found some other reviews on the internet that stated a similar problem with the recording on this machine. I’ll give two stars though since overall Sagem’s customer service was pretty good. But unfortunately this machine has some major flaws.

The features on this product are pretty excellent.

It does all it’s supposed to with ease, and no comlicated set-up (phew!).

Pausing, rewinding, fast forwarding and playing live TV is great and so easy that my 6 year old daughter can do it. Pausing live TV is the key benefit we’re getting from a PVR – with no hysterics from said child who now realises that she doesn’t need to miss something in order to answer a questin or set the table for lunch, etc.

Series link and whatever the feature’s called that enables programmes to be recorded by programme details rather than time (relying on broadcaster information to start the recording) are also excellent.

It is however slightly let down by the user interface.

The EPG and the list of recorded programmes seem very pixelated and slow to respond and navigate through – though at least it’s cached in stand-by mode, so always available quite quickly. The virtual keyboard is a chore (I guess maybe not an issue for people who text a lot – the keyboard is basically the 0-9 numbers like on a mobile). The sort of of the recorded programmes list in inconsistent. When wanting to select and act on multiple recorded files, after selecting the first one in the list, the interface then doesn’t give you any details of the other files your are trying to select (which when combined with inconsistent sorting leaves you relying on remembering time/date information for selecting the files). They really could have and should have done so much better for what is essential a very good product.

All in all, it does what it says on the tin, and at a pretty good price. Just a shame they didn’t spend a bit longer on the interface.

    Update after 6 weeks use:

I’ve removed a star rating because I’m so frustrated with the series link. It’s a really useful feature – when it works, but I’m finding lots of series that don’t distinguish their episodes via the information available to the EPG. This PVR doesn’t have any settings like “record all instances”, it simply records one instance, then thinks it has recorded them all because it can’t tell the difference between future verions. The result is it doesn’t record any more of that series. In addition, there’s no way to see what you’ve asked it to record, but that it has decided it’s not going to bother with. I’m constantly having to reprogramme the box for the same series.

This could be such a good product with just a little more thought on usability.

    Firstly the good.

Well specified and offering a variety of features and customisations such as:

Excellent Wizard based auto setup when first powered on

    picture in picture

    pause and rewind live TV

    record two separate programs simultaneously

customised favourite lists for TV and radio channels

Timer or EPG based recording scheduler

built in 500G drive allows for plenty of recording space

Possible to file and organise recordings into folders

Export recorded programs to external USB connected hard drive

    Play MP3 and picture files

    printed manual (in English only)

Build quality good, strong and not too plasticky

HDMI output will upscale picture to 1080i

Powerful tuner pulled in more channels than my old Freeview box when used with a set top antenna

    Now the Bad…

Picture quality sharp and clear but (for me) colours a little muted

No ability to play USB video files

The on screen menus and GUI is a bit slow, clunky and old fashioned looking

The unit is not cheap but to me looks like a budget unit

The unit is small and may not blend in with your DVD, media player or other TV devices

Will upscale to 1080i but will NOT play High Definition TV signals

Can’t connect to your home network

This is a good unit. It has a wide variety of features, is well built, and works very well but is let down by a poor interface, cheap appearance and by becoming increasingly dated. Freeview HD is with us now and set to expand to an increasing number of channels. This device is not cheap and for the price I would be looking for HD capability even at the price of losing some of the other features.

No problems about it’s capabilities and if you don’t need HD and are not bothered by a somewhat annoying interface this is a good buy – otherwise wait for the HD version.
