I’ve never left a review before but in this case I thought I had to. I’m your typical bloke with kids, wife and like my gadgets. Over the last few years I have converted most of my music to iTunes, we have a Mac also and the odd Iphone and ITouch. I bought the ATV so that i could:

    a. Stream Music to my stereo

    b. Hire Films

    c. Stream Films from Mac

    d. Watch U Tube

    e. Watch Home Videos and extensive photo collection.

This device does everything seamlessly and my wife loves it as well, which means it’s not an exclusive gadget, thats what Apple excel at. Can’t fault it really, looking forward to more ATV updates and developments!

Bought mine in US where it was $99 rather than £99, but it is a bargain at either price.

Very easy to set up. I have used it to rent movies, to view photos and to stream music to my hi fi, replacing an Airport Express for audio. Picture quality is excellent. Audio works perfectly whereas the Airport Express used to drop out from time to time. Performance might be helped by the fact that my Apple TV is connected to the router by Ethernet, which is available as an alternative to WiFi.

Comes with no cables so you need an HDMI lead for the TV. The only audio output is optical Toslink so if you are connecting to a hi fi as well as a TV you will need a Toslink cable. If, like me, your hi fi does not have an optical input you will need a digital to audio converter then an RCA cable to connect the converter to your hi fi. I bought the Lindy converter from Amazon (about £40)and it works well. By the time all that is added up it is not quite such a bargain, but still well worth it.

    Get one.

OK I’ll admit it. I’m an Apple convert.

3 years ago I didn’t even own an iPod, but after buying my first iPod Classic, I soon followed suit with the iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, switched from PC to iMac (a huge step for me after 20+ years knowing PCs inside and out), and now this little box of tricks.

Setting up the Apple TV was typically simple. Plug in, turn on, set-up your Apple ID and you’re good to go. YouTube clips stream perfectly and the film ‘store’ is easily accessible and searchable.

I decided to dump Lovefilm after becoming frustrated with the fact that you can rarely choose which films you are sent for what is a fairly expensive service. With Apple TV I can spend less per month simply renting the films that I want to watch. The movie rental on Apple TV was excellent – fantastic sound/picture quality, and the convenience of having a link to trailers and reviews on-screen is great. However- a word of warning for anyone with poor broadband speed- I currently pull about 2MB and a normal-length film took about 7 hours to download (overnight, not during peak time).

Controlling the system with your iPhone using the Apple Remote app is an absolute pleasure and just so intuitive. The bundled remote control was soon placed in a drawer and forgotten. Plus – because it’s controlled wirelessly (rather than IR), you can even change music/channels from another room and the Apple TV will respond instantly.

Setting up a direct link to stream content from my iMac was a breeze. All my saved photos/videos/tv shows/movies, as well as my music library are now available via the far superior speakers/visuals on my TV. Great for parties…select a playlist (or even use Genius) and you’re good to go. It’ll even play a screensaver of your latest photos as a backdrop to the music.

Just a couple of criticisms – my girlfriend and I have different music/photos stored on our respective iTunes/iPhoto libraries on the iMac. The Apple TV only lets you stream content from one account easily, without having to log-out/in from the settings menu. Also, no 1080p output?! This seems like a large oversight, or a poor excuse to release a 1080p updated version next year.

I so love Apple products and Apple TV 2 is no exception; it was easy to set up; it instantly recognised my network and I was watching movies from my macbook in no time at all. I was initially a bit worried about it not having a hard drive but there is absolutely no need. This is possibly one of the best products I have bought; get one, you will not be disappointed!
